Pump the Wave 2004
Tulane
University's Staff Advisory Council (SAC) is on the move! 2004 marks the second
year of the SAC's active participation in the American Heart Association's
annual Heart Walk. Last year, Tulane University and Tulane University Hospital
and Clinic ranked first among the top five corporate teams in the City of
New Orleans with over 200 faculty, staff and students participating. The
SAC's goal this year is to increase participation to at least 400 walkers.
Paul K. Whelton, M.D., M.Sc., Tulane University's senior vice president for
Health Sciences is the Heart Walk's 2004 Chairman.
Saturday, September 18th is the date of this year's walk starting at 8:00 a.m.

2004 American Heart Walk
In New Orleans, the American Heart Association has already invested more than 3 million
dollars in biomedical research at Tulane and other institutions in our city.
This investment in cardiovascular disease is also an investment in the economy
of New Orleans as American Heart research grants are providing financial support
for many of our local researchers.
The Heart Walk will be held under the beautiful oaks of New Orleans City Park!
Teams and individuals from throughout the New Orleans area will participate in
the walk. The start/finish line will be near the end of Roosevelt Mall, and a variety
of food and festivities will be located behind the New Orleans Museum of Art all walkers.
The Heart Walk is a 5k (3.1 mile) route and is sure to get you motivated to start your
own fitness regime for a heart-healthy lifestyle. Parking is available along the
sides of the street lining Roosevelt Mall. Family and friends are welcome at the event
to enjoy the fun activities for all who attend including the Audubon ZooMobile! It is
a wonderful opportunity for fitness and fun for the entire family while supporting a
great cause.
To add excitement to the momentum of this year's walk, the SAC has launched the
"Pump the Wave" campaign. In hopes to make this important community event a
growing annual Tulane day of health and highlight of the fall semester,
all Tulane walkers will receive a commemorative Pump the Wave t-shirt made
possible through the generosity of UnitedHealthCare. The Heart Walk offers many
levels of participation including team captain, individual walker or donor. The SAC
is hosting a contest this year in which for $1 anyone may purchase a heart to cast
their vote for someone to receive a cream pie in the face! Top ten contenders for
the low-fat and heart healthy cream pie will be tracked on the Pump the Wave web site
(see below).
